SILVER MEDAL PERFORMANCE FOR STRATFORD U-14 STINGERS
After dominating the courts during pool play and earning their way into the finals with a

gritty semi-final win, the Stratford Stingers U-14 girls squad ended up with a 2nd place medal from the final match of the O.V.A. tournament played in Simcoe on the weekend.

The Stingers won the first two sets of the opening game decidedly over Brant Youth with strong efforts by Bella Aart, Regan Silcox and Mackenzie Fierling who scored with impressive accuracy.

Another victory over tournament hosts Simcoe Xtreme kept the ball rolling with incredible service points by Ellen Thorup and Milyana Mulder. Multiple defensive saves from Ella Makohn provided the 25-12 and 25-8 scores to tell the tale of a team poised to succeed. Another 2 set victory over the London Sharks, with Olivia Mark, Kiera Slattery and Aydrie Groenestege controlling the play, won Stratford the pool play and set up a nail-biter semi-final against the Ancastor Lions. After winning the opening set 25-21 with points by hard-hitting Claudia Eckstein and game-saving defense from Becky Walsh, the Stingers dropped the next set 12-25. However, they recovered from the first lost set of the tournament and thanks to skillful play from Mikayla Groenestege secured entry to the final with a score of 15-12.

The Stratford Stingers finally fell to tournament champs Hamilton Smash with sets 22-25 and 21-25. Stratford coach Ken Thorup praised the great job from the team throughout adding, “Really happy with serving today as well lots of good pass/set/hit sequences.”
